Vitalia Senior Residences at Westlake Invites You to Celebrate National Good Neighbor Month in Their Neighborhood

Category: Memory Care

Author: Grace Striker, Memory Care Director

September is “National Good Neighbor Month,” and in the spirit of this special time, we would like to take the opportunity to share about a unique part of our senior living community – our Memory Care Neighborhood.

Here at VITALIA Senior Residences® at Westlake we strive to make our Neighborhood a special place, not just for our residents, but for everyone who comes to visit and join in our daily festivities. We celebrate being good neighbors every day.

We refer to our Memory Care community as a Neighborhood to help create that home-like atmosphere. This is their home. People that live next to them are their neighbors and when they walk around, they are walking the neighborhood. We work hard to create an atmosphere that has residents and families feeling connected and welcomed. Our Memory Care Neighborhoods work hard at empowering residents and families to join, mingle, and make themselves at home.

We strive to focus on residents’ wants and needs. Using a person-centered approach to care, we can cater needs and programs to what your loved one is used to. The meals we eat, games we play, layout of the neighborhood, and training for the staff, is all designed to provide the best care possible for residents in our Neighborhood.

We love and encourage all family members to be a part of the Neighborhood. The Care Partners and Director work hard on building family relationships and ensuring secure bonds and open lines of communication. We want the Westlake Neighborhood to be a place of safety and acceptance. We encourage families to join events, create their own, and enjoy everything we have to offer!

September is also Alzheimer’s month. There are many ways to support people who are living with dementia. Being a good neighbor and supporting those with Alzheimer’s is as easy as smiling and saying “Hello.” Residents in our Neighborhood are incredibly friendly and just want to feel valued and needed. The best way to be supportive is to simply remind them of their importance. Remind them of how much value their presence has and how happy you are to be able to share in this moment!

We encourage everyone to be a “good neighbor” and find ways to engage and make a difference in the lives of individuals living with dementia. You don’t need to have a special talent, just a heart for others around you. If you would like more information about volunteering in a Memory Care Neighborhood near you or if you are caring for someone with Alzheimer’s or dementia, we would love to help!
