Vitalia Westlake Debunks Myths Surrounding Memory Care

Category: Dementia Resources

Author: Grace Stricker, Memory Care Director

There are several myths surrounding memory care, the specialized attention for individuals with memory impairments, such as Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia. It’s important to debunk these myths to promote a better understanding of memory care by providing accurate information to help families find the right level of care at the right time for their loved ones.

We try and encourage more independence in our Memory Care Neighborhood by providing a safe space for residents to engage, learn new skills, and complete a wide variety of tasks. Having our Neighborhood operate on a daily routine allows residents to choose their events and programs. We also use family-style dining, which allows selections by seeing and smelling large platters of food, like at your family home. We work hard to be the safe space that allows residents to thrive and enjoy their lives.

We strive to make our Neighborhood feel like home. By using the daily routine, we can focus on resident engagement and person-centered care to not only have events, but events that residents want to be doing and enjoy. Engagement plans help us gain a broad picture of what each resident likes and needs. We want to create a space that feels welcoming and comfortable while allowing a sense of purpose.

Memory Care does not affect just the elderly and we want our Neighborhood to reflect that. This disease meets people at all different ages and stages of life, so we work on adapting events and programs to meet each person where they are. We also know that families may come spend time in our Neighborhood and we want them to also feel welcomed and comfortable. We encourage family interactions and encourage them to join us whenever they can.

We often find that our Memory Care Neighborhood is where residents can truly thrive. By having a smaller, safe community they have the freedom to do what they choose. Daily structure and scheduled events help residents engage and by including them in those choices, even with set-up/clean-up, it helps them lead more well-rounded, purposeful lives.

As the Memory Care Director at Vitalia Westlake, I hope this information helps provide a better picture of an Arrow Memory Care Neighborhood. It is important to gather accurate data to dispel myths and make informed decisions regarding memory care for yourself or a loved one. Arrow Senior Living Memory Care Neighborhoods are full of life and joy. They are a place where individuals living with dementia can thrive and feel purposeful. Interested in learning more?
