Staff Spotlight: Why We Choose Senior Living Culinary

Category: Culinary

Author: Justin Roach, Culinary Director

Every great meal starts with someone who cares.

Behind every breakfast served, every decorated brunch buffet, and every favorite recipe prepared is a team of dedicated culinary professionals who choose to make a difference every single day. While many cooks, servers, and dishwashers could work in traditional restaurants, they have chosen a different path—one where the people they serve become neighbors, friends, and even family.

In this Staff Spotlight, we’re highlighting the incredible individuals who make our dining programs special. Their stories remind us that senior living is about much more than preparing and serving meals—it’s about creating comfort, building relationships, celebrating life’s moments, and making every resident feel at home.

We asked members of our culinary teams to share why they chose senior living and what makes this work so meaningful. Here are their stories.

Discover why culinary team members at Vitalia Westlake choose senior living, where food creates comfort, connection, memories, and joy.

Giving Back Through Food

As Culinary Director at Vitalia Westlake, I wanted to use my passion for food to give back to the generations who came before us. In senior living, food is so much more than what is on the plate. It is comfort, memory, connection, and sometimes the best part of the day.

Being able to create those moments for residents makes this work feel meaningful. Senior living quickly felt like exactly where I was meant to be. Each meal offers a chance to serve with care and purpose.

Residents have also given me a new appreciation for time. Their stories show how quickly life can change. Hearing how different the world once was is incredible, especially when compared with how far technology and society have come.

More than anything, residents have taught me to slow down. They remind me to enjoy the moments right in front of me. They also show the value of a really good story.

One favorite tradition is brunch. It gives the culinary team a chance to go all out. From the creative menu to the décor, presentation, and setup, every detail matters. Seeing residents enjoy the full experience makes the work especially rewarding.

Creating Moments That Speak for Themselves

Success in senior living culinary takes patience, empathy, and a good heart. A sense of humor helps, too, because every day brings something new. Being transparent, truly listening, and leading with compassion also matter.

Great food is important. Still, the genuine connections made along the way often make the biggest difference. Those relationships help residents feel seen, heard, and cared for.

The little moments after a great meal, brunch, or Candlelight Dinner can mean everything. Residents may stop by to share how much they enjoyed the food. Their excitement reminds the culinary team that the effort matters.

One recent example came when residents stopped me in the hallway to rave about our hot honey chicken wings. Moments like that are powerful. They show that a passion for food can speak to residents without saying a single word.

Sometimes, all it takes is one really good bite. A favorite flavor, thoughtful dish, or shared dining experience can create joy. In senior living culinary, those moments help make the community feel like home.

Every member of our culinary team has a unique story, but they all share one thing in common—a passion for serving others.

Whether they’re preparing a resident’s favorite comfort food, celebrating a birthday, or simply greeting someone with a smile, their work goes far beyond the kitchen. They create moments of joy, foster meaningful relationships, and help make our communities feel like home.

To every cook, server, dishwasher, and culinary leader who chooses senior living over a traditional restaurant, thank you. Your compassion, dedication, and commitment to hospitality make a lasting impact on the lives of our residents every single day.

Together, we’re not just serving meals—we’re serving memories.
