As Resident Services Director at Vitalia Westlake, I’ve seen firsthand how a strong sense of community transforms senior living from a place to stay into a place to thrive. Building connections among residents, team members, and the surrounding neighborhood isn’t just a nice-to-have — it is essential for fostering well-being, joy, and purpose.

Creating community begins with understanding what makes each resident feel valued and included. It comes from experiences that spark conversation, laughter, and shared memories. Whether it’s a small group event, a holiday celebration, an Act of Service, or a themed gathering, these moments strengthen relationships and help residents feel like they truly belong.
From my perspective, every interaction is an opportunity to weave the fabric of community. When residents feel connected, they enjoy their days more fully and experience the emotional and social benefits that come with genuine human connection.
To me, “community” in a senior living setting means belonging, connection, and purpose. It is about creating a place where residents feel supported and at home. Every shared laugh, activity, and conversation helps transform our community into a family — a place where everyone is known, cared for, and celebrated.
Building connections among residents is essential because friendships foster happiness, engagement, and a sense of purpose. These relationships turn ordinary days into meaningful experiences and help each person feel part of something special.
I encourage residents to engage with one another by organizing events that inspire conversation, laughter, and teamwork. Whether it’s a group game, a creative project, or sharing stories over coffee, there’s always something for residents to enjoy. I also love pairing individuals with similar interests, since it helps friendships form naturally and keeps our community lively and connected.
We strengthen our relationship with the surrounding town through intergenerational partnerships with local schools and community groups. These visits bring joy, energy, and fresh perspectives to our residents and young visitors alike. We also take part in local celebrations and special events so residents feel connected to the larger community around them.
One of my favorite events is the monthly visit from the children of the Intergenerational School of Cleveland. For an hour, students and residents play games, share snacks, and enjoy each other’s company. The laughter and connections that grow between generations are heartwarming to witness. These visits remind us how powerful and uplifting genuine community can be.

To help new residents feel welcome, we focus on making them feel at home from day one. Each new resident receives a welcome bag with a handwritten card, a monthly calendar, and department head information. Our Resident Ambassadors personally introduce themselves and share a meal with each newcomer to create an instant connection. We also host a monthly new resident social so everyone can meet, mingle, and feel part of the Vitalia Westlake family.
At the heart of our community, connections are everything. Every conversation, shared laugh, and meaningful interaction enriches the lives of our residents. As Resident Services Director at Vitalia Westlake, I’ve seen how intentional efforts to foster these connections can transform daily life — turning our building into a true home and creating moments that residents and their families will treasure.
By prioritizing relationships, engagement, and a sense of belonging, we’re not just planning events — we are building a vibrant, supportive community where everyone can thrive. Ultimately, it’s the connections we nurture that make all the difference.
